In the Love of Christ we Continue our Heritage…
By Marilyn Nash

This is a theme that has been used on past occasions when the Methodist Episcopal Church now known as Ionia First United Methodist Church has honored specific milestones in its church history.

In honor of the 175 years of Methodist in Ionia (1834-2009), we plan to kick off our anniversary year with three events in May. The Ionia County Historical Society is sponsoring a Church Tour on May 16th.  Ionia First will participate in this community event from 10:00 – 2:00.

Much of the documentation on our church history notes the faithfulness and commitment of the congregation during very difficult times such as the Panic of 1873 and the Great Depression. It was during the most difficult of economic times that each of the three Methodist church buildings were constructed.

Now in 2009 we find ourselves experiencing another time of great economic challenge.  In honor of our long history of caring and serving the needs of our community, we have launched a May Day, May Day, May Day project (a WWII code call for HELP) -- being coordinated by the United Methodist Women -- to provide a funds to help families in our community with critical needs.

On May 17th a Congregation Celebration was held with a day
filled with “fun history related” activities for our Church family.
Here is a copy of the invitation:

Bible Ventures
On your mark, get set, GO!!!
Starting 9:30am September 13th for pre-school through 5th grade.
Our Sunday School Program called Bible Ventures will be
starting with a        BANG!

Yes, the BANG of God creating the world and US. For the upcoming year we will be studying one of the MOST EXCITING BOOKS OF THE BIBLE:
GENESIS, a book about us!

We’ll take time to study those names that are familiar like Abraham, Joseph and Noah; and some that aren’t so familiar like Laban and Lot. We’ll learn about a huge tower, an unbelievable promise, a mushy love story. We’ll learn that lies NEVER work and God’s plans always do.

Through great storytelling, fun games, delicious food, and crazy lessons, we will learn that God is powerful, very smart, and oh so loving. Come be a part of BIBLE VENTURES!
The more the merrier!

And...we haven’t forgotten our youth!

All middle school and high school students, come join us in the library
on September 13th . We are starting a new class for you! If you’ve got questions about God or about how to be a Christian at school, or how to relate to your family...this class is for you!

We extend a great big thank you to Becky and Matt Kasper for teaching our youth the last couple of years. They will be taking a well-deserved break and we will have some new teachers. So, come see what is happening
in the library!
